Great Hall

Transforming the Great Hall into a world class facility for the 21st Century

CLIENT

City, University of London

CONTRACT VALUE

£750,000

Located in the Northampton Square Conservation Area, the Great Hall forms part of the Grade II listed College Building. The project included working closely with the client to develop the technical design through RIBA Stage 4 to deliver the complete internal refurbishment of the space. We dismantled the old stage and installed structural steel lintels and acoustic panels, accessing high level works from a birdcage scaffold. We renewed ceilings, lighting systems, flooring and decorations, as well as installing new electrical / AV systems, and seating with data points to every seat.

• The project team collaborated closely with the client to process variations in the design during contract. We appointed consultant architects and structural engineers and co-ordinated their input to the technical designs via weekly Teams meetings.

• The new video wall was designed and built to very fine tolerances to allow the installation of the AV system, using cutting edge technology and linked to the interactive lectern and lighting system. It also partitioned the void space behind the former stage, creating fully fire rated compartmentation, and was built with structural steel lintels over 2 floors, creating additional storage space with new access doors to the rest of the College Building.

• We coordinated the programme to allow partial reoccupation of the space by students and building users prior to completion.
